Its name comes from an inn, formerly located between Ghent and Malines, which owner was called Pauwel Kwak. In those days, people traveled by coach. When coachmen stopped at Pauwel Kwak's inn, they wanted to quench their thirst with the home beer while keeping their horses. Consequently the innkeeper invented this special glass that could be hung on the coach with a special support. Since these days, the glass kept its unique shape and a wood support has been added to let it stand on the table.
